Strengths and trade-offs

Dyson V10 Konical + Auto-empty Dok

  • Click-in battery you can swap for a spare
  • Auto-empty Dok holds 2.5L, which Dyson says is up to 60 days of dust
  • Dyson quotes 150AW suction and a laser-style light that shows hidden dust
  • Higher RRP of the two
  • Dyson's UK page doesn't state a warranty term

Shark PowerDetect Speed Clean and Empty Pet Pro (IA3241UKT)

  • PowerDetect adjusts to floor type, edges, dirt and direction
  • Motorised Pet Tool in the box
  • 5-year guarantee on registration (2 years on the battery)
  • Shark doesn't publish air-watt suction, so you can't compare power directly
  • Shark says the dock holds up to 45 days of debris, less than Dyson's 60-day claim

How to choose

The questions that decide it, in the order most people should ask them.

01

Decide whether you need an auto-empty dock

Both of these models come with a dock that empties the bin and charges the vacuum. If you don't mind emptying a bin by hand, both brands sell cheaper versions without the dock.

02

Check run time against your floor space

Both brands quote up to 60 minutes, but only in the lowest power mode with a non-motorised tool. With the motorised floor head in a higher mode, expect much less. Larger homes benefit from a swappable battery, which the Dyson has.

03

Think about pet hair and long hair

The Dyson's conical head and the Shark's pet tool are both designed to stop hair wrapping round the brush. In a multi-pet home, the Shark's Pet Pro bundle includes a motorised pet tool.

04

Compare guarantees

Shark offers a 5-year guarantee on registration (2 years on the battery). Dyson's product page doesn't state its term, so check it at checkout before you buy.

Dyson V10 Konical + Auto-empty Dok vs Shark PowerDetect Speed Clean and Empty Pet Pro (IA3241UKT) — common questions

Which is more powerful, Shark or Dyson?

Dyson quotes 150AW of suction for the V10 Konical. Shark doesn't publish an air-watt figure for the PowerDetect Speed, so the makers' own figures can't settle it directly.

Do both vacuums empty themselves?

Yes. Both are sold here with a dock that empties the bin and charges the vacuum. Dyson says its 2.5L dock holds up to 60 days of dust, and Shark says its dock holds up to 45 days.

Can I swap the battery?

On the Dyson V10 Konical, yes: it uses a click-in battery. Shark's product page doesn't say whether the battery swaps, though Shark sells spare battery packs separately.

Why compare these two models?

"Shark vs Dyson" is a brand search, so we picked two current cordless sticks with an auto-empty dock in a similar RRP band (£569.99 and £519.99). Both are on sale at their makers' UK stores.
