How to choose

The questions that decide it, in the order most people should ask them.

01

Start with your TV

The Pro's gains are clearest on a good 4K TV, especially one with 120Hz. On an older 1080p or basic 4K set, the standard PS5 gets you most of the experience for less.

02

Count the cost of discs

The PS5 Pro has no disc drive. If you buy physical games or watch Blu-rays, add Sony's separate disc drive to the Pro's price, or choose the disc PS5.

03

Check the games you play

PSSR and the higher frame-rate modes only apply to PS5 Pro-enhanced titles. Look at whether your favourite games are on Sony's enhanced list before paying more.

04

Think about storage

Modern games are large. The Pro's 2TB holds twice as much as the PS5's 1TB, which could save you buying an M.2 SSD upgrade later.

Sony PlayStation 5 Console (1TB, disc) vs Sony PlayStation 5 Pro Console (2TB) — common questions

Does the PS5 Pro play all PS5 games?

Yes. Both consoles play the same PS5 library, and Sony says the Pro also plays PS4 games. The Pro's extra upscaling and frame-rate modes only apply to games enhanced for it.

Does the PS5 Pro have a disc drive?

No. The PS5 Pro is all-digital out of the box. Sony sells a separate disc drive that attaches to it if you want physical games.

What are the UK RRPs?

After Sony's April 2026 price change, the UK RRPs are £569.99 for the 1TB disc PS5, £519.99 for the Digital Edition and £789.99 for the PS5 Pro. Retailer prices often differ.

Is there a digital PS5 as well?

Yes. The PS5 Digital Edition has 825GB of storage and no disc drive, at a UK RRP of £519.99. It accepts the same add-on disc drive.
